The menu here focuses on comforting tea house classics. Afternoon Tea is one of the highlights and easily the most talked-about item in many reviews. It arrives neatly arranged with freshly baked scones, light bites, and sweet treats that pair perfectly with a pot of tea. The scones are soft and warm, just the way they should be, and they make a simple cup of tea feel like a proper occasion. Alongside them, the biscotti adds a pleasant crunch, especially enjoyable if you’re lingering over a second drink.

Another simple pleasure at Bake & Roast @smithills Hall is the classic tea and cake combination. The cakes are fresh, balanced in sweetness, and clearly made with care. Many visitors treat this spot as a quiet afternoon break rather than just a quick stop for food. The relaxed pace encourages you to slow down, sip your tea, and enjoy the surroundings. Because of that, it feels less like a typical restaurant and more like a cozy tea house where time moves a little slower.

Practical details also make the experience smooth for guests. The venue provides a wheelchair accessible parking lot and wheelchair accessible seating, helping ensure that everyone can comfortably enjoy the space. Payment is simple as well, with credit cards, debit cards, and NFC mobile payments accepted. These small conveniences make a noticeable difference when you’re planning a relaxed visit with friends or family.

In terms of atmosphere, the place strikes a balance between casual café and traditional tea room. The menu remains focused and approachable, which actually works in its favor. Rather than an overwhelming list of dishes, you get a thoughtful selection that highlights classic tea house flavors. Many diners who leave reviews mention how easy it is to settle in for a peaceful afternoon, whether they’re stopping by after a walk or meeting someone for a quiet catch-up.

Bake & Roast @smithills Hall stands out not because it tries to do everything, but because it does a few things very well-good tea, comforting baked treats, and a welcoming environment that encourages guests to sit down, relax, and enjoy the moment.

What customers say?

“ Had Mother's Day afternoon tea here last week and it was excellent! Efficient service by friendly staff. We were given a table in the window so we were able to enjoy the view of the gardens. This was near the coffee bean grinder and staff warned us it might be a bit noisy while they used it but it didn't bother us at all. Food was superb, plenty of it, beautifully presented and delicious. Mini soup with cheese straw, then selection of sandwiches, delicious sausage roll, potato wedges, salad garnish. Clotted cream scones, strawberries and blueberries and a delicious carrot cake. A very good afternoon tea enjoyed very much! ”

“ Stunning location offering indoor and outdoor seating. Excellent on a sunny day. I ordered a chicken roll, expecting a normal sandwich, and was stunned when this mountain of a sandwich arrived. It also came with a side salad, some crisps, and a lovely ploughman's chutney. Very good value for money. The chicken was soft, but not dry. The roll had a crispy exterior, but melts in your mouth, with a slightly salty taste to the bread. Delicious. Also, they were very accommodating of my dietary requirements making adjustments so I could order what I wanted. Excellent customer service. ”

“ What a find! After just having coffees from bake & roast this summer (but in the beautiful gardens) today, because it's finally too cold, we ventured inside and what a treat. The staff were so welcoming and we're more than happy to move tables around to fit our pram. We ended up staying for brunch and the food was delicious thank you! xx ”

“ Really nice place and environment. We had the lunch platter for two people and the portions sizes were great with a reasonable price. Highly recommend trying the tomato and red pepper soup if they are serving it! The staff were also very friendly and kept the tables clean. ”

“ In not knowing what to expect, our breaths were taken away as on entry to Bake & Roast, you immediately walk through history as you enter into this manor house. At first, you think you’re having lunch in a historically set tearoom, but quickly realize this isn’t the case as Bake & Roast have brought a modern look that welcomes you with comfort and LOTS of light. One wall of this tearoom has such a large window that it almost gives you the impression of having lunch on the patio, overlooking a spectacular garden. The hosts were incredibly friendly, and their smiles quickly made you feel welcome. Before selecting which table, you’d like to dine at, you notice the freshly baked pies and colorful cakes. An assortment of homemade goodness that soon makes you realize you need to factor in dessert too! The menu is well-priced and though not overbearing, you can easily find a meal that will tickle most appetites. For those adventurous foodies, Bake & Roast offer a twist to some of the traditional pies and due to being a lover of most unique recipes, we had to order some of each as a takeaway for later (these new tastes did not disappoint at all). The meal I had decided on was the traditional sandwich and soup combo, and wow! When this meal arrived, it was much larger than what I expected, the ingredients were incredibly fresh, and the love put into each item on the plate was very obvious. Normally not one to finish a large plate of food, the bread and salad were so light that I was able to enjoy every bite. I can highly recommend the soup, as it was rich and thick, and presented in the perfect size soup cup. The hosts were very proud of their tearoom and took great pleasure in showing us the history behind this venue. Having heard some of the stories of the estate and in having them gladly show us around parts of the establishment, this created a little space, which meant a cup of tea and freshly made scones could be enjoyed. Very truly a place that knows how to make the heart and stomach happy. We highly recommend this venue for your coffee dates, light lunches, afternoon teas & cake. ”

“ Went there twice in one week- so good! The hall is free to visit and really fascinating step into the past and surrounding gardens and wooded walks are all stunning! The cafe is great with really friendly staff and a great selection of cakes and delicious Lavazza coffee. Lunches are also served but you need to get there a bit earlier for that. They also do cream teas and you can buy gift vouchers for other people. Pretty reasonably priced too considering the cost of living surge recently. Look forward to becoming a regular! ”
